Astrology is a kind of magick!
Our first Mercury retrograde for this year will commence on 31st January and ends on 21st February.
Recall that Mercury was the messenger of the Gods – transmitting information between them. In astrology He is seen as the energy of communication and perception, travel and contractual relationships.
So when Mercury the planet appears to move backwards in the sky – retrogradation – be prepared for complications, disruptions and upsets to our plans! Be prepared for changes to plans you have in place, including travel arrangements: leave early and have contingencies in place!

We will be having three periods of Mercury retrograde this year, next will be 30th May to 23 June, and then, 27th September until 19th October.
All these periods will occur in the 3 air signs, currently in Aquarius, then Gemini during May and finally, Libra in September.
So, the focus of this mercurial energy during 2021 will be on communication, the mind, and connectivity. The areas that Mercury rules!
Being in retrograde, this will mean miscommunication, misunderstandings, and disconnections may be experienced.

But knowing this, we can be prepared to be more open, to actively listen and genuinely engage with others.
“Did I understand what was being said”, “did I ask clear questions”, “was I giving enough time to convey my message” and vice versa.
In a nutshell and contrary to popular belief, Mercury retrogrades are not bad: they are great times to review, research, and prepare your projects and goals that can be implemented when the planet goes direct again: after 21st February.

Another factor is that when Mercury retrogrades, He is traveling back over areas of our life we have already been working on.
During this period in February, Mercury travels backwards from 26° Aquarius to 11° Aquarius where He was from around 15th January this year. What will He be doing revisiting old ground?
Ground that we may need to rework, review for errors or mistakes. Don’t forget that Mercury is a speedy fellow – maybe we rushed to complete projects in mid-January and in doing so missed something vital? Well now is the time we will find out!

Where Mercury sits in your natal chart will provide you with a guide to those areas of life you can work with to make this retrograde work for you. Were you born during a period of mercury retrograde? If so, you might find that this is a great time for you to communicate with a sense of calm – no more feeling like your mind is rushing from one thing to another!
Check out the aspects that Mercury at 26° Aquarius to 11° Aquarius makes to any planets you have in your birth chart, such as:
- Squares in Taurus or Scorpio (these will be tense energies creating a sense of collision, but which if handled well will provide the greatest opportunity for growth);
- Oppositions in Leo (here, there will be the need to find balance and avoid the extremes of the planetary energies);
- Trines in Gemini or Libra (harmony and flow will be found here, but if not worked with, the energies will lack the vitality there can bring);
- Sextiles in Aries or Sagittarius (sextiles provide support and stimulation of the planetary energies, providing opportunities to grow).
- Conjunctions in Aquarius. When conjunct, two planets share a purpose: they are unified and their energies remain unique to their own essence but are directed together.
Which ever house the planet is in will determine where you will be experiencing the impact of Mercury retrograde in your daily life.
